How to Make a Sigil: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Oct 19, 2026by Julia Munck

In short: A sigil is a symbol you create to hold a single intention. To make one: write your intention as a short present-tense statement, cross out repeating letters (and often vowels), combine the remaining letters into one abstract design, then charge it with focus and let it go. The method most witches use today comes from the English artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare in the early 1900s.

You already make sigils. You doodle the same little shape on every meeting agenda. You have a signature nobody can read. A sigil is that, on purpose, with a job to do.

What is a sigil?

The word comes from the Latin sigillum, meaning seal. Medieval and Renaissance grimoires were full of sigils, seals said to represent angels and spirits. The modern personal sigil is newer. Austin Osman Spare (1886 to 1956) developed a method for turning your own desires into symbols, then pushing them into the subconscious mind. Chaos magicians later popularized it, and today it is one of the most common practices in modern witchcraft.

The idea is simple. Your conscious mind loves to worry a wish to death. A sigil disguises the wish so your deeper mind can work on it without your overthinking getting in the way.

How to make a sigil in 5 steps

1. Write your intention

Make it short, specific, and in the present tense, as if it is already true. Positive phrasing works best.

  • Instead of "I want to stop being broke," write "MY INCOME GROWS."
  • Instead of "I hope I sleep better," write "I SLEEP DEEPLY."

2. Remove letters

Cross out all repeated letters so each appears once. Many witches also remove vowels. Example: "I SLEEP DEEPLY" becomes S, L, P, D, Y (vowels and repeats removed).

3. Design the symbol

Combine the remaining letters into one shape. Overlap them, rotate them, flip them, merge lines. Keep going until it no longer looks like letters. You want it to feel like a mark, not a word.

4. Simplify

Redraw it a few times, removing anything unnecessary, until it feels clean and a little bit powerful. You will know. It usually gets a small "oh" from you.

5. Charge it

Charging gives the sigil energy. Ways to charge:

  • Focus: stare at it in candlelight until your mind goes quiet.
  • Breath: breathe fast and deep for a minute, then exhale onto the paper.
  • Movement: dance or shake until you are slightly out of breath, then look at it.
  • Moonlight: leave it under the full moon overnight.
  • Fire: burn it to release the intention (safely, in a fireproof bowl).

Then, and this is the hard part, forget about it. Spare's method depends on letting go. Obsessing over it keeps the wish in your anxious conscious mind.

Other ways to make a sigil

  • Sigil wheel: letters arranged around a circle. Draw a line from letter to letter to spell your intention, and the path becomes your sigil.
  • Magic squares: number grids linked to the planets, where letters convert to numbers and you trace the path. More advanced, very old.
  • Pictorial sigils: combine simple images (a key, an eye, a wave) instead of letters.

Where to put your sigil

  • Carve it into a candle before you burn it. See DIY spell candles.
  • Draw it on the bottom of your coffee mug or in the steam on your bathroom mirror.
  • Trace it with your finger in lotion or oil on your skin.
  • Slip it into your wallet, phone case, or shoe.
  • Put it in a spell jar.
  • Chalk it on the sidewalk outside your home.
  • Draw it on the back of a work document before you hit send. Mundane meets magical.

Sigils can be collective too. Witches have used them for justice and protest, which you can read about in Hex the Patriarchy.

Sigil FAQ

Do sigils really work?

Practitioners say yes, and the psychology is on their side: clear intentions and repeated symbols focus attention. The best way to know is to try one with a small, specific goal and track what happens.

Can I use a sigil someone else made?

You can, but a sigil you make yourself is tied to your own words and intention, which is the point.

How long does a sigil take to work?

There is no fixed timeline. Many people notice shifts within one moon cycle. If nothing happens after a few months, make a new one with a clearer intention.

What if I see my sigil and remember the meaning?

Do not panic. Many modern witches keep sigils in plain sight as a daily reminder. Find what works for you.
