How to Make Moon Water (and What to Do With It)
In short: Moon water is water left out overnight under the moon, most often on the full moon, to absorb its energy. To make it, fill a clean glass jar with water, set an intention, place it where moonlight can reach it, and bring it in before the sun hits it. Witches use it to cleanse crystals and tools, water plants, add to baths, mist rooms, and anoint candles.
You have definitely done this already. You set a jar on the windowsill, forgot about it, and found it three days later next to the dish soap. Good news: that still counts. Here is how to do it on purpose.
What is moon water?
Moon water is water charged with lunar energy and an intention. The idea draws on a very old instinct: people have tracked and honored the moon for as long as there have been people, and water and the moon are bound together by the tides. Modern witches use moon water as a simple, low-cost way to bring the moon's cycle into everyday practice.
How to make moon water: step by step
- Pick your moon. The full moon is most popular. See the phase guide below.
- Use a clean glass jar with a lid. Glass, not plastic. A mason jar is perfect.
- Use clean water. Filtered or spring water if you might drink it. Tap or rainwater is fine if you will not.
- Set your intention. Hold the jar and say what this water is for: clarity, release, love, protection, a fresh start. You can write it on a label and stick it to the jar.
- Put it in moonlight. A windowsill, balcony, or garden. Cover it with the lid or a cloth so nothing falls in. Cloudy night? It still works. The moon is there whether you can see it or not.
- Bring it in early. Collect it before strong sunlight, unless you want sun water (that is a whole different spell).
- Label and store it. Note the date and moon phase. Keep it in the fridge if you plan to drink it, and use within a few days.
Which moon phase is best for moon water?
- Full moon: power, clarity, charging, gratitude, release. The all-purpose choice.
- New moon: fresh starts, intentions, planting seeds for what comes next.
- Waxing moon: growth, attraction, building momentum (money, love, projects).
- Waning moon: letting go, banishing, cleansing, breaking habits.
- Eclipses: many witches skip making moon water during eclipses because the energy is considered unpredictable. Others love it for big transformation. Your call.
For more on working with each phase, see rituals for each moon phase.
You can also charge moon water for the zodiac sign the moon is in. A full moon in Taurus makes excellent water for money and pleasure. A full moon in Scorpio makes water for shadow work and power.
Can you drink moon water?
Only if you started with water that is safe to drink, used a clean jar, kept it covered, and refrigerate it and use it within a few days. If you used tap water you would not normally drink, rainwater, or added crystals, herbs, or anything else to the jar, do not drink it. Use it externally instead. Some crystals are toxic or dissolve in water, so if you want crystals involved, set them next to the jar, not inside it.
8 ways to use moon water
- Cleanse crystals and tools. Rinse or anoint water-safe stones. (Selenite, malachite, and many soft stones should not get wet.) More in 6 ways to charge your crystals.
- Add it to a ritual bath. A splash in the tub turns a bath into a ritual. See how to take a ritual bath.
- Mist your space. Pour into a spray bottle and mist rooms, doorways, or your bed.
- Water your plants. Especially anything you planted with an intention.
- Anoint candles before spellwork, or dab on your wrists and third eye.
- Make tea or coffee with it (only if it is drinkable, see above) and sip your intention.
- Wash your hands before ritual to mark the switch from errands to magic.
- Clean with it. Add a splash to the mop water. Yes, really. Mundane meets magical.
Moon water FAQ
Does moon water need to be in direct moonlight?
No. Direct moonlight is lovely, but the intention and the timing matter more. A windowsill on a cloudy night works.
How long does moon water last?
For drinking, a few days in the fridge. For non-drinking uses, many witches keep it until the next full moon and then make fresh.
Can I make moon water indoors?
Yes. Set it by a window that faces the moon.
What do I say when I make moon water?
Something simple works: "Moon, fill this water with clarity and power for my highest good." Or just name what you want. Direct is fine.
