How to Read Tarot for Beginners: A No-Nonsense Guide
In short: A standard tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana (big life lessons, like The Fool, Death, and The Star) and 56 Minor Arcana (everyday situations) divided into four suits: Cups (emotions), Pentacles (money and body), Swords (thoughts and conflict), and Wands (passion and action). To read tarot, you shuffle while focusing on an open question, lay out cards in a spread, and interpret each card by its image, its traditional meaning, and its position. Start with one card a day and a simple three-card spread.
You bought a beautiful deck. You opened the little booklet. It said the Five of Pentacles means "material hardship," which is not what you wanted to hear before your first cup of coffee. You put the deck in a drawer. Let us get it back out.
Where does tarot come from?
Tarot started as a card game. Tarocchi decks were played in northern Italy in the 1400s, with beautiful hand-painted trump cards made for wealthy families. Their use for divination came later: in the late 1700s, French occultists began linking the cards to Egyptian mysteries and the Kabbalah. In 1909, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck was published in London, designed by occultist A.E. Waite and illustrated by artist Pamela Colman Smith, who gave every card, including the Minor Arcana, a scene you can read. Most modern decks still follow her imagery.
How tarot works (and how it does not)
Tarot is not a fixed prediction machine. Think of it as a mirror for your intuition. The images give your mind a story to work with, and the story often surfaces what you already sense but have not said out loud. Whether you believe in spirit guidance or just in your subconscious, the practice works the same way: look, notice, reflect, decide.
The Major Arcana
The 22 Major Arcana cards, numbered 0 to 21, are sometimes read as "The Fool's Journey," a story of a soul moving through life's big lessons. A few to know first:
- 0 The Fool: new beginnings, a leap of faith.
- I The Magician: you have the tools. Use them.
- II The High Priestess: intuition, secrets, the inner voice.
- XIII Death: endings and transformation. Almost never literal death.
- XVI The Tower: sudden upheaval. What falls was not built to last.
- XVII The Star: hope and healing after the storm.
- XXI The World: completion, a cycle closing.
The Minor Arcana and the four suits
Each suit has ten numbered cards (Ace through Ten) and four court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King). The suit tells you the area of life:
- Cups (water): love, feelings, relationships, intuition.
- Pentacles (earth): money, work, home, the body.
- Swords (air): thoughts, truth, conflict, decisions.
- Wands (fire): passion, creativity, ambition, action.
The numbers tell you the stage: Aces are beginnings, Fives are challenges, Tens are completion. If you know your elements from astrology, you are already halfway there. See this short astrology lesson.
How to do your first tarot reading
- Get grounded. Light a candle. Take three breaths. Put your phone face down.
- Ask an open question. "What do I need to know about my career right now?" works better than "Will I get the job?"
- Shuffle however you like while thinking about the question. Stop when it feels right.
- Draw three cards and lay them left to right.
- Read the spread: Past, Present, Future. Or try Situation, Challenge, Advice.
- Look before you look it up. What is happening in the picture? What colors, faces, and feelings do you notice? Then check the traditional meaning.
- Write it down in your Book of Shadows. Come back in a week.
How to learn the cards faster
- Pull one card a day. Notice how it shows up. You will remember the Three of Swords forever after the day it predicted your terrible meeting.
- Learn the suits and numbers instead of memorizing 78 separate meanings.
- Talk to the cards. Describe each image out loud as if to a friend.
- Pick a deck you love looking at. If the art does not move you, the cards will not either.
What about reversed cards?
A card drawn upside down is "reversed." Some readers interpret reversals as the card's energy being blocked, delayed, or turned inward. Many beginners skip reversals at first. Both are fine.
Tarot FAQ
Do you have to be gifted a tarot deck?
No. That is a popular myth. Buy the deck that speaks to you.
Can tarot predict the future?
Readers differ. Most modern readers see tarot as showing the current energy and likely direction, which you can change with your choices.
How do I cleanse a tarot deck?
Knock on it three times, shuffle it thoroughly, leave it in moonlight, or set a crystal on top overnight.
What is the difference between tarot and oracle cards?
Tarot follows a fixed 78-card structure. Oracle decks have any number of cards and themes chosen by the creator. More in the art of divination.
