What Is Black Salt? Witch's Black Salt vs. Kala Namak, and How to Make It
In short: Witch's black salt is a protection blend made by mixing salt with something black, usually ash from incense, candles, or a fire, or charcoal. It is used to banish negativity, protect doorways, and absorb bad energy. It is not food. It is completely different from kala namak, the edible "black salt" used in Indian cooking.
You have probably seen "black salt" in two very different places: a jar on a witch's altar and a bag at the Indian grocery store. One is for protecting your front door. The other is for chaat. Please do not mix them up at dinner.
What is witch's black salt?
Salt has been used for protection and purification across cultures for thousands of years. It preserves, it purifies, and it draws out moisture, which is why folk magic treats it as something that absorbs and repels. Black salt takes that idea further by adding ash or charcoal, which is associated with banishing, endings, and fire's power to transform.
Black salt shows up in modern witchcraft, hoodoo, and folk magic, and each tradition has its own recipes. The common thread: protection and sending unwanted energy away.
Witch's black salt vs. kala namak
- Witch's black salt: salt mixed with ash, charcoal, or other black ingredients. Gray to black and gritty. Used in ritual. Do not eat it.
- Kala namak (Himalayan black salt): a mineral salt used in South Asian cooking. Pinkish-gray when ground, with a sulfur smell from its mineral content. Edible.
- Hawaiian black lava salt: sea salt blended with activated charcoal, sold as a finishing salt. Edible, but not what witches mean by black salt.
When a spell calls for black salt, it means the witch's kind.
How to make black salt
You need: coarse salt (sea salt or kosher salt), something black, a mortar and pestle or bowl, and a jar.
Basic black salt recipe
- Put 3 to 4 tablespoons of salt in your bowl.
- Add about 1 tablespoon of ash: from burned incense, a protection candle's wick and wax remains, a fireplace, or paper you burned in a spell.
- Optional: add a pinch of ground black pepper (protection, sending away), or crushed dried rosemary (cleansing).
- Grind and mix counterclockwise if you are focused on banishing, saying what you want gone. Clockwise if you are focused on protection coming in.
- Store it in a labeled jar. Label it clearly as "not for food," especially if you share a kitchen.
Other black ingredients witches use
- Charcoal from incense discs (crushed when cool)
- Scrapings from a well-seasoned cast iron pan
- Black food coloring or powdered black pigment (a practical shortcut)
Handle ash and charcoal only when completely cold, and keep the finished salt away from pets and kids.
7 ways to use black salt
- Protect your threshold. Sprinkle a thin line across the outside of your doorway or windowsills. Sweep it out and replace it each month.
- Banish after a bad visit. Sprinkle at the front door after someone leaves, then sweep it out the door.
- Add it to spell jars for protection and banishing. See how to make a spell jar.
- Circle a candle. Ring a black or white candle with black salt during protection work. More in this protection spell.
- Carry it. A small pinch in a sealed pouch for travel or hard days.
- Corners of a room. A pinch in each corner of a new home or office.
- Bury it. To release something for good, bury a bit with your written intention far from your home.
Black salt FAQ
Is black salt bad or negative magic?
No. Black salt is protective. The black is about absorbing and banishing, not harming.
Can I use black salt in a bath?
Not the witch's kind. Ash and charcoal do not belong in your bath. Use plain sea salt or bath salts for ritual baths instead.
How do I dispose of used black salt?
Sweep it out your front door and away from your home, toss it at a crossroads, or throw it in the trash outside. Do not sprinkle large amounts in a garden, since salt harms plants and soil.
How long does black salt last?
Stored dry and sealed, indefinitely. Many witches make a fresh batch each season or after a big banishing.
