Candle Magic Color Meanings: What Each Candle Color Is For
In short: In candle magic, color is a shortcut to intention. The most common correspondences: white for purity and any purpose, black for protection and banishing, red for passion and courage, pink for love and self-love, green for money and growth, yellow for confidence and clarity, orange for creativity and success, blue for calm and healing, purple for intuition and power, gold for wealth, and silver for the moon. If you only have white, use white. It works for everything.
You are standing in the candle aisle at the grocery store, holding a green pillar labeled "Mountain Breeze" and wondering if it counts as a money candle. It does. Wipe off the vibes of the store, give it a job, and light it.
Why does candle color matter?
Candle magic is one of the oldest and simplest forms of spellwork: fire plus focus. Color adds a layer of symbolism that helps your mind lock onto the intention. These correspondences come mostly from Western folk magic, hoodoo, and modern witchcraft, and they vary between traditions. Use them as a starting point, not a rulebook.

How to do a basic candle spell
- Cleanse the candle. Wipe it down, pass it through incense smoke, or hold it and say "you are clear."
- Carve it. Use a pin or toothpick to carve your name, a word, or a sigil into the wax.
- Dress it. Rub a little oil on the candle. To draw something toward you, rub from the ends toward the middle (or top to bottom). To send something away, rub from the middle out. You can roll it in dried herbs, but go light. Too many herbs can catch fire.
- Set the intention. Hold it and say exactly what it is for, in the present tense.
- Light it. Use a match if you can. Many witches feel a lighter is less ceremonial, but a lighter beats not doing the spell.
- Let it burn. Small spell candles can burn all the way down while you are present. For big candles, snuff (do not blow) and relight over several days.

What is the flame telling you?
Witches have read flames for centuries. Common interpretations:
- Tall, steady flame: strong energy, the spell is moving.
- Small or weak flame: slow going, or resistance. Keep working.
- Flickering or dancing: active energy, sometimes spirit presence. Or a draft. Check the window.
- Lots of black smoke: obstacles or negativity being burned off. Also, trim your wick.
- Candle tunnels or will not stay lit: the work may need more time, or a different approach.
Always rule out the mundane first. A good witch checks for a draft before she checks for a ghost.
Candle safety
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep it on a fireproof dish away from curtains, pets, and kids. Trim wicks to about a quarter inch. Go easy on oils and herbs, which make candles burn hot.
Candle magic FAQ
Can I use a scented candle for spells?
Yes. Choose a scent that matches your intention (cinnamon for money, lavender for calm) and you have doubled up.
What do I do with leftover wax?
Bury it for growth spells, throw it away off your property for banishing, or keep it on your altar for ongoing work.
Is it OK to blow out a spell candle?
Many traditions say snuffing is better, because blowing can feel like blowing your intention away. If you must leave, snuffing and relighting later is fine.
