Cord Cutting Ritual: How to Cut Energetic Cords (Step by Step)
In short: Cord cutting is a ritual for releasing an energetic attachment to a person, place, or pattern that keeps draining you. The classic version uses two candles joined by a string: one candle represents you, the other represents what you are releasing, and you burn or cut the string between them. It does not erase love or memories. It ends the pull.
You blocked them. You deleted the photos. You are completely over it. And then you walk past the coffee shop and your whole body tenses. That leftover tug is what witches call a cord.
What is an energetic cord?
In many spiritual traditions, relationships are described as connections of energy, sometimes visualized as cords running between people. Healthy cords let love and support flow both ways. Unhealthy ones keep you tethered to someone or something long after it stopped being good for you: an ex, a toxic boss, a parent's expectations, an old version of yourself.
Whether you see cords as literal energy or as a powerful metaphor for emotional attachment, the ritual gives your nervous system a clear moment of "this is over." Humans have always needed rituals for endings. Most of us just never got one.
Signs you might need a cord cutting
- You think about someone constantly, and not in a good way.
- You feel drained after every interaction, or every time they cross your mind.
- You keep repeating the same relationship pattern with different people.
- You feel responsible for someone's feelings to the point of losing yourself.
- You left a job, home, or relationship months ago and still feel stuck there.
When to do a cord cutting ritual
The waning moon (after the full moon, as the light shrinks) is traditional for releasing and banishing, and the dark moon is powerful for endings. The full moon works too, for release with a spotlight. Samhain, the Witch's New Year, is one of the best nights of the year for it. See rituals for each moon phase.
What you need
- Two small candles (chime or spell candles work best because they burn fast). White, or black for you and a color for the other.
- A piece of natural string, twine, or thread, about 12 inches
- Two candle holders and a fireproof tray
- Scissors, or a ritual knife (athame)
- Paper and pen
Cord cutting ritual: step by step
- Clear the space. Tidy up, open a window, burn incense. Put your phone in another room. They do not get to text you during this.
- Name the candles. Carve your name on one candle and the name of the person, place, or pattern on the other. Use initials if that feels better.
- Tie the cord. Tie one end of the string around each candle, then set them in holders a few inches apart on the fireproof tray.
- Speak the truth. Write down what this connection gave you and what it cost you. Read it out loud. Be honest. Gratitude and rage can sit in the same paragraph.
- Light both candles. Say: "I release you with love and I take my energy back. What is mine returns to me. What is yours returns to you."
- Cut the cord. Either let the flames burn through the string, or cut it yourself with scissors or a knife, firmly, in one motion. Watch both ends fall.
- Close. Let the candles burn down while you stay nearby, or snuff them. Wash your hands, take a shower, or take a ritual bath. Throw the remains away off your property.
Stay with burning string and candles the entire time, and keep water nearby.
What to expect after a cord cutting
Some people feel instant relief. Some feel grief, which is normal, because endings are endings. Others notice the person reaches out right after (it happens a lot). You do not have to answer. Strong cords sometimes need the ritual repeated over a few moon cycles. Journal what you notice for the next week.
A ritual is a powerful tool, but it is not a replacement for real-world support. If you are leaving a relationship that feels unsafe, reach out to people you trust or a professional too. Magic and a plan go well together.
Cord cutting FAQ
Will cord cutting end my relationship?
No. You can cut the unhealthy cord with someone you love, like a parent or partner, to end a pattern without ending the relationship. Set that intention clearly.
Can I cut cords without candles?
Yes. Visualize the cord and cut it with your hand or an imagined blade, or cut a string with scissors. The intention matters more than the tools.
How often should I do a cord cutting?
As needed. Some witches do a small one every waning moon as energetic hygiene.
Is cord cutting the same as shadow work?
They go well together. Cord cutting releases the attachment, and shadow work helps you understand why it formed so you do not build the same cord again.
